Pet Loss

PET LOSS

The loss of any beloved pet has a big impact on our lives. As an owner of a terrier-mix, “Bootsie”, was taken from us forever. Bootsie was the best friend anyone could have had for nearly thirteen years.

Never having felt the pain of loosing a pet the weeks that followed Bootsie’s death could only be described as pure grief. It took our whole family weeks and weeks to get over her death.

We had no one to tell us how to cope or give us Pet Loss support. So I thought I might tell you some of whit I have learned.

Why do I feel like this?
People grieve differently. Even with people who are sharing loss in the same family.

Depression
Depression is natural. Don’t dwell upon your loss; it can leave you powerless to cope with your feelings.

Guilt
You may feel responsible for your pets death. If they have died from an accident or illness, this emotion makes it harder to resolve your loss and focus on your recovery.

Denial
Denial make’s it hard to accept your pet is gone. Don’t deny you pain, this emotion distracts you from the important task of working through your Pet Loss Recovery.

Give Yourself Time
Talk to someone or your family about your pain and loss. The death of your pet can bring back painful memories or unresolved conflicts from the past. This amplifies your current emotions. The important part is seeking to understand what has happened and what you are feeling, is all right.

Good Memories
During times when the pain feels unbearable, focus on all the good memories of your loved one. Take some of your loved ones belongings and pictures and create a special remembrance of them. Our family made a pet memorial, which later turned to a garden memorial in our backyard. This gave us a special place to relive our memories of Bootsie.

Support
I have since found a very good book that will help you through your grief. This book actually takes you through the grieving process with warmth and understanding.

At this time in our lives we need help to heal. Most of us have trouble coping with the loss of a cherished family member. I highly recommend this book. You can find it here

Your relationship with your pet is very special. Keep them in your heart and they will never be forgotten.
